Mental Health Disorders

Body Dysmorphia Disorder (BDD)
Body dysmorphia is a mental health condition where a person spends a lot of time worrying about flaws in their appearance. Around 1-2 in every 100 people have BDD. BDD affects people of any age but it is most common in teenagers and young adults, and it affects all genders equally. (NHS, SLAM NHS)
Muscle Dysmorphia (MD)
Otherwise known as Bigorexia, Muscle Dysmorphia is an anxiety disorder which causes someone to see themselves as small, despite being big and muscular. A 2015 report suggested 10% of men training in UK gyms could have the condition, which can lead to depression, steroid abuse and even suicide.
Eating Disorders (ED)
An eating disorder is a mental health condition where you use the control of food to cope with feelings and other situations. Types of eating disorders include Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder (BED), or an Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder (OSFED) such as Disordered Eating or Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). Disordered Eating
An Eating Disorder is a clinical diagnosis, whereas Disordered Eating “refers to abnormal eating patterns that do not meet the criteria for an eating disorder diagnosis” (Fuller, 2024). It can include restrictive dieting, compulsive eating or skipping meals (Butterfly).
Depression
Depressive disorder (also known as depression) is a common mental disorder. It involves a depressed mood or loss of pleasure or interest in activities for long periods of time. An estimated 3.8% of the population experience depression, including 5% of adults (4% among men and 6% among women). (WHO)
Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety is a psychological and physiological response to stressful, dangerous, and unfamiliar situations. Anxiety can be a problem if it impacts your ability to live. Anxiety Disorders include Generalised Anxiety disorder (GAD), Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Phobias, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and BDD. (Mind, Anxiety.org)
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
OCD is an anxiety disorder where a person experiences frequent intrusive and unwelcome obsessional thoughts. It impacts 1.2% of the population, around 750,000 in the UK (OCD UK)
